1. Slo-Fi Illustrations: Create Beautifully Imperfect Art With Handmade Layers

Illustration of a bearded wizard wearing a pointy red hat and shoes and holding a magic wand; his black cape is spread wide open to display the words “Be a pen tool wizard in Photoshop,” all against a black, “chalkboard” background with magical white stars and curvy lines
Limiting your color palette and working with physical materials gives your work a human touch that’s sometimes missing from 100% digital creations.

Class: Slo-Fi Illustrations: Create Beautifully Imperfect Art With Handmade Layers by Tom Froese

Learn to create a handmade, analog look in a digital environment with a Slo-Fi workflow. You’ll use real-life ink, paper, and textures, then layer them digitally for an aesthetic reminiscent of mid-20th century art and advertising.

Who Teaches It

Tom Froese is an illustrator, teacher, and speaker who likes to work with joyful colors, quirky shapes and spontaneous textures. His global client list includes Airbnb and Yahoo!, and his work is featured in books, maps, advertising, and more.

What Makes It Special

This class explores the idea of a limited color palette, such as those used in the advertisements of earlier decades. Working with fewer options forces a different kind of creativity, and results in a final piece that brings handmade warmth to digital artwork.

What Students Are Saying

I had so much fun with this class. It was an enjoyable and relaxing way to slow down and play with the way I create art. I really appreciate Tom Froese's style of teaching in his classes. One of the things I've learned in his classes is that, part of what makes his work stand out is the extra level of care and attention he gives his illustrations. For an example of this, check out the last session in this class.-Sheree Tomba
